MIT Association of Japan - Presidential Address

SHIMURACHikaru
A Word from the President

Hikaru Shimura, E.E. '72
President & CEO
Rigaku Corporation

At present, the MIT Association of Japan (MIT-J) has approximately 1900 members, making it second in size only to the US alumni association. MIT-J is comprised of an incredibly diverse array of people. Not limited to undergraduate alumni, MIT-J members include graduates from PhD and masterfs degree programs, as well as researchers, professors, and Short Program participants from a range of disciplines.

In the months ahead, in the hopes of revitalizing participation and making the club more meaningful to all of our members, we will be experimenting with a few new approaches. Specifically:

1. From the greater MIT-J community, form subcommunities grouped by generation and field of interest. The club will provide a net-based social platform to enable and strengthen communication in each of these smaller, more focused communities
2. Develop close relationships with MIT alumni associations across Asia
3. Create connections to Japan-based alumni associations from other top tier US universities.

I hope that you share my enthusiasm for what this organization can become, and ask that you provide whatever support you can.

Hikaru Shimura, E.E. '72
